Mechanical Technician I

Job Description

The Mechanical Technician I works at the United States Postal Service (USPS) Central Repair Facility (CRF) in Topeka, KS. The CRF is a depot repair facility for USPS mail processing, delivery, and bulk mail systems repairable parts. Examples: repairing printed circuit boards, electrical, electronic, mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies to component level. The CRF provides depot level maintenance for essential automation, mechanization, retail and bulk mail processing systems used in all mail processing and retail installations.

Our Mechanical Technician fabricates, tests, analyzes and adjusts precision mechanical items using blueprints, sketches, hand tools, metal working machines, measuring, and testing equipment. Operates metal working machines such as bench lathe, milling machine, punch press, and drill press to fabricate housings, fittings, jigs, and fixtures. Verifies dimensions using micrometers and calipers. Assembles wires, insulation, and electrical components such as resistors and capacitors following method layouts, using fixtures, bore scope, files, soldering tools, tweezers, wire cutters, pliers, and screwdrivers. Removes, replaces, and reinstalls electrical assemblies and hardware in housings using hand tools and soldering equipment. Tests items per requirements for circuit continuity and operational reliability using multimeters, voltmeters, and bridges. Analyzes test results, makes repairs or adjustments accordingly. Applies working technical knowledge to perform simple or routine tasks in working on various types of equipment to the component level, following detailed instructions which cover virtually all procedures. Knowledge may be acquired through assignments designed to increase competence (including classroom training) so that worker can advance to a higher level technician. Receives technical guidance as required from supervisor or higher level technicians. Work is typically spot-checked, but is given detailed review when new or advanced assignments are involved. Assignments may include all other duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications:

High school graduate or equivalent.
Completion of formal training or military training required. Formal technical training and/or experience lengths of which are dependent on shop assignment.
A minimum of two years verifiable work history experience in mechanical and/or mechanical repairs may be used in lieu of education.
Must have knowledge and ability to perform repairs on simple electronic and simple to medium complexity Mechanical items.
Must be able to read both electrical and mechanical wiring diagrams, schematics and blueprints.
Ability to perform basic troubleshooting techniques.
Understand the fundamentals of AC and DC motor theory.
Must be able to read, write and understand the English language well enough to perform one's duties without undue degradation of one's abilities.
Must be able to lift forty (40) pounds
Must be a US citizen and be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust government security clearance
