Mechanical Engineer - Pulsed Power System Engineer

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for Mechanical Engineers. You will develop concepts and perform engineering analysis for high power systems associated with new advanced accelerator designs. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Derive engineering requirements, develop conceptual designs, and perform supporting analyses of complex mechanical systems, test prototypes, and associated diagnostics.
- Perform electro-mechanical design, layout and stress analysis for pulsed power control modules.
- Contribute to and/or lead the development of models of mechanical systems (especially finite element models), through geometry and mesh creation, selection or development of appropriate material models and properties, and application of suitable boundary conditions.
- Perform structural, thermal or thermo-mechanical, modal, dynamic, and/or multi-physics analyses; perform post-processing; and present and document results.
- Prepare supporting safety and engineering documentation and participate in engineering design reviews.
- Direct technical tasks and teams and mentor staff within the design groups or project teams.
- Interface with other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory to complete various projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In addition, at the SES.4 Level
- Provide and implement engineering solutions to resolve highly complex technical and programmatic issues in a multi-discipline environment.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert in identified areas, routinely interacting with senior management and/or sponsors across the Laboratory on advanced technical projects.
- Set broad project vision and strategy and influence technical direction and decisions made by self, team, management and/or external customers.

Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
- Advanced knowledge of elasticity, plasticity, failure, and heat transfer in engineering materials/structures.
- Advanced knowledge of materials properties and associated analytical models used in mechanical engineering problem solving.
- Significant experience with engineering analysis using structural, dynamic, and/or thermal computer codes.
- Experience participating in formal and informal design reviews.
- Substantial experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Significant experience using standard project management practices and proven ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
- Advanced organizational, verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multidisciplinary research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, document analyses, and deliver technical presentations.
In addition, at the SES.4 Level
- Significant experience identifying, defining, and solving highly complex multi-disciplinary problems in a timely, cost effective manner.
- Subject matter expert knowledge of engineering hardware design, fabrication, analysis or testing processes.
- Substantial experience setting specific strategies and/or directing multi-disciplinary teams to achieve program goals.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering
- Professional Engineer Certification

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
