Mechanical Engineer Post College Appointee

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Mechanical Engineer Post-College Appointee.  You will work under the guidance of staff members utilizing a fundamental mechanical engineering skill set to successfully design components that integrate into complex physics experiments. You will apply several analytical techniques to solve difficult design challenges. This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Work under general guidance of staff engineers and physicists in areas such as engineering design, shock physics, and gas guns.
- Apply analysis techniques in stress analysis, strength of materials, and statics to solve design challenges.
- Analyze and approve engineering drawings, including tolerance analysis and assessment of geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.
- Defend designs to engineers and physicists in a formal design review process.
- Clearly communicate design, analysis, and progress via presentations, reports, and in-person meetings.
- Collaborate with technologists, drafters, engineers, physicists, and management staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Relevant coursework or experience in Finite Element Analysis.
- Broad background in engineering demonstrated by coursework, training, and/or work experience.
- Experience designing experimental assemblies.
- Experience in computer-aided design using Creo, SolidWorks, or equivalent design package.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate in a team environment.
- Strong initiative, interpersonal skills, creativity, and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with PTC Creo and Windchill.
- Knowledge of fiber optics systems and theoretical optics.
- Familiarity with GD&T and ASME Y14.5.

 

 

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a one-year Post College Appointee with the possibility of extension to a maximum of two years.    Eligible candidates are recent graduates within two years of the month of the degree at the time of the employment offer.
