The US Air Force is responsible for over 8,000 MFH units in Okinawa including about $500M in active design and construction projects across Military Construction (MILCON), Facility Real Property Maintenance by Contract (RPMC), and Unspecified Minor Military Construction (UMMC) programs island-wide. 

Cherokee Nation Businesses is searching for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support Cherokee and the Military Family Housing (MFH) Program Management Office (PMO) at Kadena Air Base, Japan.

Job Description:

Candidate will work as part of our company’s on-site engineering team to assist across a wide variety of housing-related projects. Individuals must be familiar with applicable DoD, USAF, and Japan-specific codes and regulations. Our staff support all aspects of these projects including review of design work for repair, construction, renovation, and improvement projects for all types of Air Force facilities. Field inspections. Liaison with the Army Corps of Engineers or other design agencies. Coordinate projects with team members and other stakeholders and contractors in a variety of disciplines on technical issues throughout the project lifecycle

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Deliverables):

Includes the following (Other duties may be assigned):

  • The individual will provide detailed technical reviews in their functional area for design and construction documents to help the client manage the revitalization of all DoD military housing in Okinawa.
  • In addition to technical reviews, the engineer will be responsible for managing specific housing projects and assisting in all aspects of project planning, acquisition, and execution. Project work will include analysis and application of UFC and Japan-specific codes to design and construction facilities. Will serve as liaison with the Army Corps of Engineers or other design agencies.
  • Provide Planning, Programming, Engineering, Production Control, Inspection, and Project Management support.
  • Must be able to work with a wide cross section of clients (e.g., engineers, real property, contracting) and Cherokee employees to find solid win-win solutions using internal Air Force civil works and procurement processes for the repair, modernization, and construction of housing-related facilities and infrastructure. This work supports highly visible initiatives including the restructuring of US forces between Okinawa, Guam, and other locations.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.

Supervisory/Management Authority:

This position does not have supervisory/management responsibility, however you will provide mentorship, peer review assistance, and technical and professional leadership to colleagues

Education and/or Experience:

  • Three-years of relevant experience working with US military/DoD facilities and requirements.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical engineering; advanced degree desirable.
  • Experience with fire protection engineering/standards is a plus.
  • PMP desired

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • Experience managing programs with similar complexity with US Air Force, Army, Navy, or Marine Corps.
  • Demonstrated track record of providing technical reviews and/or managing engineering projects, and working across disciplines such as contracting, engineering, finance, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Air Force NACI/SF85 for unescorted access to on-base facilities.
  • Excellent English communication and computer skills.


  • This position is primarily performed in an Office environment on US military base in Japan
  • Requires local travel to project sites in Okinawa
