We are looking for an entry level Mechanical Engineer I in Houston, TX to help develop new products to upgrade and transform NASA’s capabilities. Raytheon engineers at Mission Support Solutions (a product line of IIS) focus on technology, innovation and Mission Assurance for existing and evolving customer mission needs in areas of Air, Land, Sea, Space and Cyber for all markets.

This position requires performing research, design, qualification and analysis of mechanical systems for military applications, with a focus on aircraft and armament products. The candidate will be responsible for the design of new products as well as the improvement of existing products. The candidate will utilize their mechanical engineering expertise during the development, production, and qualification testing phases of new product design. The candidate will create design solutions that meet product requirements using 3-D CAD modeling software, and prepare detailed data packages for use in production, integration, and testing.

Chosen team member will work with multi-disciplinary teams supporting military programs during the product development cycle. Assignments may include mechanical design, mechanical analysis, integration support, and test support of uniquely complex hardware. Candidate will work under limited supervision while exercising responsibility in meeting the technical, financial and schedule objectives of projects. Engineering decisions are data driven in nature and require preparing technical justification analysis reports as well as presenting to a variety of peer reviewers and engineering review boards. The primary focus will be the design of structures and electro-mechanical packaging associated with NASA training systems, but may also include the design of mechanisms for various NASA applications and platforms.

Required Skills:
  • Mechanical aptitude to provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity with 2 years of relevant experiece
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to communicate to technical as well as non-technical audiences
  • Strong desire to learn and contribute in a team based environment
  • Experience using 3-D CAD Solid Modeling Tools, Pro/Engineer & CREO/Simulate preferred
  • Understanding of structural materials and manufacturing processes
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Security Clearance - This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance. Except in rare circumstances, only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Desired Skills:
  • Previous industry experience (internships/co-ops), specifically design experience with NASA or defense related products
  • Experience with common industry, NASA and military specifications and standards
  • Strong desire to work in the Defense or Aerospace Industry
  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, (ASME Y14.5 standards)
  • Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis
  • Experience with Matlab
  • Experience with common industry and military specifications and standards
  • Experience generating engineering drawings, product structures (BOM), and reports
  • Experience designing to meet production cost targets (DFMA; DTUPC)

Required Education:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a STEM related field with 2 years of relevant experience.
