Mathematical Biologist

Recommended Layout:

·         Introduction

o   Applied Research Associates, Inc. is seeking a mid-level Mathematical Biologist to help develop mathematical models of the biological and physiological effects of hazardous materials and environments including, for example, constituents in tobacco products; pharmaceuticals; chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) weapons; and non-lethal weapons. The ideal candidate will have a background in biology/physiology and demonstrated skills in developing mechanistic models of biological processes at different levels of organization. This individual should understand the relationship between model fidelity and application (i.e., fit for purpose), and appreciate the implications of multiscale modeling of biological systems. In addition, the candidate should have experience using scripting languages in mathematical software (e.g., MATLAB) and/or open source options for prototyping models.

·         What you’ll do as a Mathematical Biologist

o   Work with multidisciplinary project teams to develop mathematical models of physiological response and health effects

o   Develop prototype mathematical models in scripting languages, and work with our software development team to produce scientific software for our customers

o   Recommend and apply approaches in sensitivity analysis and uncertainty characterization for the models that we develop

o   Work collaboratively with technical staff in Arlington Division to

-    Translate the biology per subject matter experts (e.g. respiratory mechanics, radiation physics) into mathematical models

-    Develop and test prototype models in a scripting language (e.g., MATLAB), and document rationale, approach, and pseudocode

-    Document the models in technical reports

-    Participate in the verification and validation of models, from developing test plans to documenting results

·         Mathematical Biologist Requirements

o   Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, e.g. applied mathematics, computational biology, engineering, or physics

o   Five to seven years of experience (three to five years with an appropriate Master’s degree) in relevant scientific research on physiological responses to exposure to human health

o   Demonstrated experience in developing mathematical models of biological processes

o   Expertise in scripting languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB

o   Well-developed research/writing skills, as evidenced by technical writing

o   Ability to work collaboratively with a research team, or to work independently with little supervision

o   Familiarity with Microsoft Office products, e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

o   Must be able to obtain a U.S. government security clearance, which includes U.S. citizenship

·          Mathematical Biologist Preferences

o   Graduate degree is strongly preferred

o   Knowledge/experience in several of the following areas is preferred

- Human physiology

- Respiratory and aerosol mechanics

- Probability and statistics or epidemiology

o   Knowledge of computational methods is desirable

o   Active DoD security clearance is desirable

o   Familiarity with object-oriented languages such as Java or C++ is a plus
