Responsibilities
Lead battery and MFC activities TEM, FIB-SEM, and surface characterization, in situ/in operando method development. Coordinate research with EEST, MFC and preparing user facility proposals.

You will conduct in depth research and technology development in technical expertise areas and serve in a leadership role in R&D on energy-related materials including nuclear fuel, energy storage and conversion materials as well as materials for applications in other harsh environments. Core areas of interest include methods and analyses to enhance the understanding of reactive interfaces including electrode-electrolyte interactions using advanced analytics methods which can enhance existing characterization activities. The candidate is expected to enhance the scientific eminence of INL and enhance business lines in fundamental characterization and analysis. Designing and developing unique methods to interrogate and stabilize reactive interfaces, developing advanced data analytics and quantification methodologies to better understand interactions occurring across length scales and developing methods to greatly improve performance of energy materials are a key aspect of this position. Collaboration between different research groups and organizations both internal and external to INL is a key part of this position. This includes working in multi-disciplinary teams and aligning INL work with key scientific user facilities within the DOE laboratory complex. Ability to closely coordinate with relationship managers and other research groups vital to this position.
You will be responsible for research, development in the areas outlined above and will be responsible for leading team(s) in areas outlined above. As a principal investigator, you will be responsible for writing proposals and obtaining funding from appropriate private and public organizations to execute work in the areas of interest discussed above. As a principal investigator, you will also be expected to independently guide others in performing a variety of unique laboratory research studies to prove new principles and concepts related to advanced materials development.

Other responsibilities include:

1) Providing input to departmental business plans and performance of duties of a line management Principal Investigator for assigned work activities.

2) Taking a lead in establishing beneficial collaborative relationship with customers, technical representatives and field operations personnel seeking application based advance materials development and deployment.

3) Serving as a technical resource to others, including mentorship and provision of oversight to junior level scientists

4) Serving as a major or sole contributor to the generation of reports, publications, and proposals and contribution to the generation of additional proposals and concepts submitted for external funding.

5) Conducting and documenting work at an appropriate quality level, including collection and interpretation of laboratory data, planning of research tasks, as well as assessing and applying a wide range of research techniques to those tasks.

6) Representing INL with sponsors and peers through programmatic and technical presentations. Engage in external technical leadership associated with relevant technical conferences or national/international in areas related to main mission as described above.

Doctorate plus five years of experience in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or a related field.

Special Requirements and/or Training:
Documented experience in energy storage, nuclear fuels or other similar energy materials. Experience performing independent research or leadership of small research teams.
