For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have two openings for Locksmiths. Under close supervision of the Locks, Keys and Tesa Group (LKTG) Operations Supervisor, and with guidance from senior locksmiths, will perform basic locksmithing techniques to ensure protection of property and classified information and materials at the Livermore Site, Site 300 and specified off-site locations in compliance with DOE Orders, NNSA Policy and ES&H regulations. You will require a strong customer-service orientation and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and short deadlines. Will interact with all levels of LLNL employees and visitors. The position is in the Security Organization.

This position will be filled at either the 821.1 or 821.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties

- Provide routine and emergency locksmith services working with technical guidance from supervisor and senior locksmiths on moderate to complex assignments.

- Troubleshoot, repair, and install various locking devices; make recommendations for replacements and/or upgrades, with guidance from supervisor.

- Change combinations on repositories, safes, vaults and Closed Areas equipped with a variety of mechanical and electromechanical 3 and 4 position spin dial combinations locks.

- Originate keys by code, key identification, and duplication.

- Work within the LKTG Service Request System, and the Tesa lock databases.

- Conduct and maintain shop stock inventories.

- Conduct level-based key inventories.

- Perform additional duties as assigned.

In addition at the 821.2 Level

- Change combinations on advanced models; install, repair, manipulate, and perform penetration bypass techniques independently for neutralization of a wide variety of combination lock installation applications.

- Perform neutralization and repair of GSA-approved containers and vault doors using opening techniques and methods recognized in Federal Standard FED-STD-809A.

- Process PFD Incident Reports and LK&TG Forms; perform database programming for all Security Key Ring storage tasks.  



- Ability to successfully complete Professional Locksmithing course, supported by in-house training.

- Ability to apply basic skills, knowledge, and abilities in locksmithing tasks learned through on-the-job experience.

- Basic experience operating various hand and power tools.

- Customer service experience, particularly in a shop environment.

- Familiarity with or ability to learn database maintenance.

- Demonstrated advanced verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact tactfully and effectively with a diverse group of personalities and disciplines and to maintain productive work relationships.

- Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and follow through.

- Experience working independently and as a team member effectively.


In addition at the 821.2 Level

- Successfully completed Professional Locksmithing course or posses’ equivalent years of experience.

- Formal hands-on training and journeyman-level experience with demonstrated proficiency in performing basic and advanced locksmith services, including mechanical and electromechanical safe lock, lock picking, bypass techniques, and key impressioning.

- Intermediate experience using with various hand and power tools used in the locksmithing field, e.g., Milwaukee electromagnetic drill press, HPC code machine, HPC duplicating machine, BEST key combinator machine and capping tool.


Desired Qualifications

- Field experience working in a classified environment.

- Knowledge of DOE Orders and Locks, Keys and Tesa policies and procedures related to the Security Organization and the Protected Areas.

- Familiarity with a PC and Microsoft Excel, Word, and FileMaker Pro.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
