Linux Systems Administrator

Incumbent will perform as a Systems Administrator. Journey level knowledge of Linux operating systems (setup, account privileges, software installation and configuration, security patches and updates, anti-virus, etc.), server administration (group policies, remote administration, virtualization, operating system baselines, etc.), or network administration (switch and router configuration, firewalls, VLAN, etc.) is required. Position involves working as part of a team with other cybersecurity and systems administrator personnel supporting varied computing configurations for enterprise IT platforms and laboratory activities.

Requires knowledge of common Linux OS distributions (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.); knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux or CentOS is preferred but not required. Knowledge of containers and container orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, Open shift) are preferred but not required. Will be required to use Microsoft Office projects on separate platforms. Will be expected to quickly learn and use DoN IT software and hardware tracking, project management tools (i.e. SharePoint and/or Jira), and cybersecurity patching/hardening procedures.

Must have excellent writing skills (high volume of emails), be well organized, able to prioritize quickly, and have strong communication skills. Must also be able to work well under pressure, and have good customer relations experience. Should be able to work as part of a team, or alone, and be able to troubleshoot problems efficiently and effectively.

Education and Experience:

  • Candidates must have a minimum of an Associates Degree and 8 years of experience. A certification may be used to substitute up to one year of experience. Additional education may be substituted for experience.
  • The position is designated as a Cyber IT / Cyber Security Workforce position.
  • Candidates with existing Security+ or technical degree, and current Linux Operating System certification will be given priority.
  • Between four (4) to six (6) years of relevant experience in systems administration and analysis.
  • Candidate must have a current secret clearance with Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) at the time of hire.

    • Working at a computer or desk (considerations: sitting, eye strain, hand strain)
    • May involve long periods of sitting or standing.
    Work Environment
    • An inside office environment (Considerations: Closed quarters, lighting, and temperature fluctuations)
    • Needs to have clear, concise and accurate communication skills
    • Need to work well with, co-operate, and support clients, supervisors, and co-workers
    • Needs to understand and apply NAWCWD security processes as a part of their job.
    • Needs to have a background maintaining facilities.
    • Will work in computer room environment with raised floors and very cool ambient room temperatures.
    Equipment and Machines
    • Standard office equipment and machines, computer workstation.

    • Installation and repair work involved will require the use of ladders, screwdrivers, and pliers.
    • Normal hours are Monday – Thursday 7:00am – 5:00pm; non-flex Fridays 7:00am to 4:00pm
    • Punctuality and regular attendance are necessary to meet deadlines
    • Occasional overtime required

    • Current driver’s license, car registration and auto insurance required
    • Must be able to obtain and hold a DoD common access card (CAC) to perform this work.
    • U.S. Citizenship and Possession of a current U.S. DoD Secret Security Clearance required.
