Lead Automation Engineer, Optics & Materials Science & Technology

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Lead Automation Engineer. You will be responsible for leading a team of Automation Engineers responsible for developing optics processing machines and upgrading existing equipment used in the Optics & Materials Science & Technologies (OMST) facilities that support the National Ignition Facility (NIF). You will demonstrate mastery of control system design, lead OMST engineering to plan for future long-term needs, and manage complex projects with multidisciplinary members and components. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
 
Essential Duties
-Manage task assignments for controls group and participate in planning and reporting for OMST Engineering.
-Provide advanced electrical engineering solutions for design, assembly, calibration, troubleshooting, and testing of electrical systems.
-Oversee electrical engineering for installation and commissioning of new and upgraded optics processing and metrology equipment in support of NIF.
-Responsible for the specification and procurement of complex and specialized instrumentation and equipment.
-Author and review formal system documentation for entire group, such as Software Requirements Specifications (SRSs) and Commissioning Test Plans (CTPs).
-Oversee Architect controls systems including hardware and software integration.
-Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
-Serve as a subject matter expert on major controls projects and multidisciplinary efforts to positively impact the organization’s long-term goals and objectives.
-Assess strategic technical needs for development of future optic processing capabilities and controls technologies.
-Lead the design and implementation of complex projects with multidisciplinary members and components.

Qualifications
-Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
-Advanced knowledge of electrical engineering design concepts related to assembly, calibration, troubleshooting, and testing of electrical machine control systems.
-Significant experience with motion control, stepper or servo motors, and position feedback.
-Significant experience with reading and interpreting mechanical, optical, and electrical specifications using drawings and procedure manuals.
-Significant experience with instrumentation and/or industrial controls systems (analog and digital) design.
-Broad experience with multiple computer programming platforms.
-Demonstrated ability to translate potentially vague customer requirements into concise control systems hardware and software specifications.
-Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
-Subject matter expert knowledge and significant experience in the performance analysis and tuning of motion control systems.
-Significant experience in developing and tuning advanced controls algorithms; extensive experience in two or more of the following areas: industrial controls, instrumentation, motion controls, software architecting.
-Significant experience in managing multidisciplinary projects.

Desired Qualifications
-MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
-Experience developing LabView programs and experience with National Instruments hardware.
-Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
