Laser Matter Interaction Scientist SEL.4/.5, Uncleared

We have an opening for an experienced Laser Matter Interaction Scientist to lead development, research, design, analysis and modeling of advanced laser material processing applications. You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team developing and deploying state-of-the art laser systems for Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DoD) and LLNL mission needs. This position is in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Principal Associate Directorate

This position will be filled at either the SEL.4 or SEL.5 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Organize and lead a multi-disciplinary team of Engineers, Scientists and technical staff to achieve specific technical goals relevant to lab mission areas in laser matter interaction science and applications, determining and prioritizing objectives and selecting technical approaches.
- Interface directly with management and external sponsors to communicate technical milestones and solicit input from technical leaders in the laser program.
- Provide advanced technical guidance in laser-matter interaction science, laser-materials processing and related microscale characterization.
- Guide development of laser-based approaches for studying and processing materials.
- Perform complex measurements, analysis, and modification of optical systems.
- Work with very complex class 4 lasers including optics layout and engineering.
- Utilize project management related software programs
- Communicate results through formal technical reports, presentations and peer-reviewed scientific journals as appropriate.
- Supervisory responsibilities including delegation of resources, scheduling, oversight of project workflows, approving timecards, and written staff performance evaluations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SEL.5 Level
- Responsible for championing projects and for attracting and retaining project funding.
- Develop strategies that enhance the ability of the lab to address new opportunities in photon sciences and laser-based applications. Oversight of involved project costs and budgets.
- Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and internal customers and serve as organization spokesperson by Laboratory management and/or external advisor by sponsors.

-  Master of Science degree in Laser Science Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Experience leading a team of scientists and engineers on technically complex projects that involve reporting out to internal and external stake holders.
- Significant experience organizing and planning advanced technical projects including budget analysis, setting, and achieving timeline deliverables.
- Experience with Continuous Wave (CW) and pulsed (fast/ultrafast) laser systems, including utilization of class 4 lasers, optics layout and engineering.
- Significant experience as an innovative experimentalist, with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
- Experience utilizing project management related software programs.
- Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to lead a technical team, interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
- Ability to work independently, with consultative guidance as well as in multidisciplinary research teams.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.
In Addition at the SEL.5 Level
- Expert knowledge of laser-matter interaction experimentation.
- Extensive experience championing, leading, and developing innovative cutting edge principles, theories and concepts.
- Extensive experience guiding and providing strategic direction for projects to a diverse group of engineers.

Desired Qualifications
- Ph.D. in laser science and engineering, physics, chemistry, or engineering.
- Experience in computer programming for data analysis (e.g. Python, Matlab, Mathematica, C/C++).
- A strong mathematical background and knowledge of laser matter interaction theory.
- Prior experience working for a large, government funded organization and/or working with external program sponsors.


Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
