Job Summary
The Interpreter converts spoken and written statements from one language to another in various settings.
Principal Accountabilities
(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)
  • Provide linguistic support to the US Department of State in assigned area of responsibility and interpret during interviews, meetings, and conferences.
  • Facilitate effective communications between speakers of different languages.
  • Interpret and translate written and spoken communications from Dari and Pashto to English and from English to Dari and Pashto.
  • Research and analyze foreign language documents for key information.
  • Transcribe and analyze verbal communications.
  • Identify and extract information components that meet US Department of State requirement list criteria; provide input to reports.
  • May get assigned different locations to help develop skills and abilities of local nationals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent command of assigned language(s).
  • Must have the ability to read, write and communicate and translate effectively in English, Dari and Pasto at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) Language Proficient Rating of S4 and R3.
  • Strong verbal and written American English skills (grammar, vocabulary, idioms, and spelling) because linguist work products are prepared in English.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software including Word and Excel.
  • Ability to translate both general and highly technical materials.
  • Thorough knowledge of cultural, economic, geopolitical, and military issues of Middle East and Arab speaking countries within that region.
  • Ability to operate standard and specialized office automation equipment to process foreign language material.

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Languages or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience translating assigned languages in a government environment.
  • Requires Top Secret clearance.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • Recurring physical exertion such as extensive walking, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities.
  • Living and working conditions at assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable.
  • Long hours, exposure to weather and hazardous conditions.
  • Personnel should be aware of moving on short notice and under adverse conditions.
