Summary:
  • TheHeavy Equipment Mechanic performs the full range of repair and modificationwork on heavy equipment and military vehicles to include but not limited tocommercial, non-tactical, tactical and tracked vehicles, passenger cars,trucks, forklift trucks, warehouse tractors, large missile carrying tanks, tankretrievers, tanks, multi-wheel drive vehicles with standard or automatictransmissions.

Duties andResponsibilities:

  • Performall maintenance actions in accordance with AR 750-1, Army Materiel MaintenancePolicy, and conducted in accordance with The Army Maintenance Management System(TAMMS) as outlined in DA PAM 750-8, DA PAM 750-1, AR 710-2, DA PAM 710-2-2,applicable LIS publications, other Governmental regulations and directives asapplicable, installation policies and procedures, and accepted industrystandards for the safe and efficient operation of equipment repair andsupporting functions.
  • Test,inspect, repair, service, maintain, transport, and process/de-processcommercial or tactical equipment.
  • PerformPMCS in accordance with TM 10/20-series manuals and Lubrication Orders (LO) toinclude all before, during, and after checks.
  • Performwelding and minor body repair.
  • Performa complete engine diagnosis on all types of engine systems and components.
  • Replacesand adjusts tracks, road wheels and tire assemblies, road wheel bearings, idlerwheels, idler bearings, and oil seals; replaces suspension arms, torsion bars, andstabilizer bars.
  • Repairsbraking systems by repairing hydraulic systems, including mastercylinders.
  • Repairsand adjusts power and mechanical steering systems as required.
  • Determinesnature and extent of repairs required and performs major and minor repair onengines, power transmissions, transfers and related electrical, fuel,hydraulic, wheel, and engine assemblies.
  • Usestechnical manuals and other publications to identify and order repairparts.
  • Operatesand inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
  • Dismantlesand reassembles equipment using hoists and hand tools.
  • Examinesparts for damage or excessive wear, using testing equipment such as compressiontesters, motor analyzers, test meters, micrometers and gauges.
  • Testsoverhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency
  • Maybe required to work an uncommon tour of duty including nights, week-ends, andholidays.
  • Otherduties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform thisjob successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential dutysatisfactorily.)

  • HighSchool graduate or equivalent with military or civilian training in heavyequipment maintenance.
  • Minimumof two (2) years experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, helper, orapprentice. Experience on militaryequipment a plus.
  • Mustpossess and maintain a current state Driver’s License.
  • Mustbe able to pass a National Agency Check (NAC) for computer access.

Knowledge, Skillsand Abilities:

  • Havea full understanding of two and four cycle engine operation.
  • Demonstratea working knowledge of all engine systems.

  • While performing the duties of thisJob, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employeeis frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reachwith hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; climb orbalance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally liftand/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this jobinclude close vision.

  • The employee will normally work ina temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure toelectronic office equipment.
  • During visits to areas ofoperations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions. Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborneparticles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
