Guidance Navigation and Controls-Early Career

We are seeking mid-career GNC engineering professionals to work in our Tucson, AZ location. The Systems Design and Performance directorate is hiring GNC engineers with experience to work in one of the following areas within the organization:
  • Strategic & Naval Systems
  • Air & Land Warfare Systems
  • Advanced Missile Systems
  • System Technology (Flight Sciences)
Our Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) Systems Engineer staff (Senior Systems Engineer I) excel in various areas in the organization to include State Estimation and Optimization, Flight Controls, Aerodynamics, Guidance Design, or GPS.

Key Responsibilities for State Estimation and Optimization:
  • Development of missile guidance algorithms
  • Development of State Estimators using Kalman filters, particle filters, IMM, etc.
  • Coding of missile guidance algorithms in higher order computer languages
  • Development of simulation kinematics models
  • Analysis and optimization of missile performance both in simulation and flight test
Key Responsibilities for Flight Controls / Flight Sciences:
  • Development of flight control system architectures and requirements
  • Implementation of advanced control laws to maximize performance
  • Coding of algorithms in higher order computer languages
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
  • Control Actuation Systems
  • Analysis of air vehicle performance both in simulation and flight test
  • Store / Weapon integration on launch aircraft
Key Responsibilities in Aerodynamics:
  • Development of aerodynamic configurations and requirements
  • Conducting trade studies to evaluate candidate system architectures including kinematic performance, stability, and control
  • Planning, coordinating, and conducting high speed wind tunnel tests
  • Planning, coordinating, and executing CFD analysis and tool development
  • Development and implementation of aerodynamics models for use in 6DOF simulations
  • Development and implementation of aerodynamic uncertainty models
  • Analysis of air vehicle performance both in simulation and flight test
Key Responsibilities in Guidance Design and GPS:
  • Develop and implement missile guidance algorithms and flight software
  • Design state estimation and guidance sensor fusion algorithms
  • Implement vehicle kinematic models in simulation
  • Analyze and optimize missile performance in simulation, laboratory, and flight testing
  • Resolve GNC system anomalies observed in simulation or test environments
Required Education, Skills and Experience:
  • BS degree in one of the following: Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Systems Engineering with four (4) years of applied work experience (MS degree and 2 years of experience or Ph.D. with academic experience)
  • Strong academic and analytical background with course work and independent research that includes a combination of at least two of the following areas: digital and modern control systems, dynamics, Kalman filter design, signal processing, 6DOF simulations, guidance algorithms, flight control requirements development, or wind tunnel testing
  • Four (4) years of applied work experience with Matlab, C, C++, Object Oriented design
  • Past use or familiarity with UNIX and LINUX operating systems as well as Microsoft products
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.

Other Requirements:
  • Must have an existing Department of Defense issued Secret Security clearance.
  • Must be willing to relocate to Tucson, AZ (comprehensive relocation package available)
Desired Education, Skills and Experience:
  • Masters or Ph.D. in degrees listed above
  • Experience with missiles, gravity bombs, glide bombs, or autonomous/collaborative air vehicles
  • Ability to operate independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership and other engineering disciplines
  • Depending on technical focus area:
    • Guidance law development, state estimation, Kalman filtering, sensor fusion, trajectory shaping, path planning, miss distance performance optimization, kinematic analysis of actuation system effectors
    • Free stream wind tunnel testing and aero model development
    • Flight testing; ability to design an envelope clearance test plan, reduce the data, and validate the 6DOF flow field models
    • Planning and executing flow field wind tunnel tests including grid runs, captive trajectory systems, and attached-store loads testing
    • CFD analysis and interpreting CFD data
    • System identification techniques applied to flexible body dynamics, and application of structural filters to minimize impact to control systems
    • Assessing GNC system integration risks through test data analysis
    • Preparing system trade studies
    • Performance analysis by simulation Monte Carlo assessments with expected system disturbances, including verification and validation techniques
    • Algorithm optimization
  • Knowledge of related disciplines: airborne RADAR systems including RF signal processing and tracking algorithms; embedded software development and hardware/software integration; system engineering design methods including requirements analysis and flowdown, specification derivation and interface control documentation
