Job Title:  GIS Specialist

Location:  Arlington, VA


ALEX Alternative Experts is looking for a skilled GIS Specialist for an immediate opening.  The successful candidate will be responsible for providing oversight creation, integration, maintenance, and management of a government agency’s geospatial data for a facility. This “geospatial” program is not specific to a single technology but covers CADD/BIM/GIS, imagery, and other supporting technologies. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

Required Qualifications: 

  • Meet and maintain secret level security clearance.  A higher clearance level may eventually be required.
  • Experience performing geospatial modeling, analysis, and data manipulation
  • Experience creating, updating, and maintaining databases, attributes, maps, and graphs using GIS software and related equipment
  • Working with architectural and facilities drawings and designs.
  • Experience analyzing spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate into documents and reports.
  • Experience compiling geographic data from a variety of sources including censuses, field observation, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, tabular data, databases, and existing maps
  • Entering map data through use of a digitizer or by direct input of coordinate information using the principles of cartography including coordinate systems, longitude, latitude, elevation, topography, and map scales
  • Experience with Trimble data collection with GPS receivers required
  • Experience using Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, & Outlook)
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills
  • Ability to walk long distances outdoors to enter and exit facility as well as conduct surveys
  • Ability to occasionally lift and handle boxes and equipment up to 20 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with GIS/CADD/BIM program tools and applications like ArcGIS, Autodesk, Revit
  • Comprehensive knowledge of GPS land and utility surveying
  • Experience in managing and configuring data and metadata to common geospatial standards such as SDSFIE is a plus
  • Certified Geographic Information System Professional (GISP) or Post-graduate GIS certification

Education Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Geographic Information System (or related field), or 3 years of experience in geospatial gathering, modeling and data manipulation
