Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Developer

Job Description


What You’ll Get to Do:

You will be responsible for the creation, analysis, and maintenance of various spatial datasets and applications to support the Department of Homeland Security Customs and Border Protection (DHS/CBP) by providing technical insight related to resolving issues, planning, organizing, and documenting activities associated with assigned projects.  You must be able to execute database queries, construct views and joins to support analytical tasks. You will work as a member of a small specialized team to design and develop mapping and dashboard applications, and will provide consultative services to AMO’s (Air and Marine Operations) management staff.

More About the Role:

  • Designs, developments, and maintains GIS application software to support business process automation
  • Provide consultative services to AMO’s management staff
  • Manages enterprise-level GIS software systems to support storage and delivery of geospatial data, oversight of design and maintenance of databases, including the development, and compliance of accepted GIS operating standards
  • Supports the extractions, transformations, and loadings (ETL) of departmental data into ArcGIS online dashboard(s) or similar technology for the analysis and presentation of data
  • Represents the organization in collaboration with other organizations, including functional counterparts, DHS S&T, other federal agencies, industry partners and academia
  • Evaluate and interpret results from statistical analysis tools and coverage analysis programs
  • Utilizes latest MATLAB and GIS software, desktop technology, conferencing technology, and Microsoft Office or comparable software to execute daily work functions
  • Prepares and maintains project and work status reports
  • Prepares and deliver presentations and/or training sessions on GIS and related technology, tools or procedures for department, and company staff on as needed basis
  • Travel may be required (Domestic/Foreign)


You’ll Bring These Qualifications:

  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must be able to attain US Government Secret Security Clearance
  • Must be able to successfully pass a CBP Background Investigation
  • Innovative thinking and strong analytical and problem solving skills to deal with complex situations
  • Strong communication skills including effective presentation skills and the ability to write and edit technical reports
  • Demonstrated ability to set clearly defined objectives and to plan activities/projects well in advance, taking into account possible changing circumstances
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain good relationships with internal and external counterparts
  • Proficiency developing GIS applications using Python, Java, Javascript API, ASP.NET, AJAX, JSON, PHP, HTML, HTML5, C#, and related ArcGIS SDK's
  • Proficiency writing complex queries and joining and appending tables in MS SQL Server or Oracle
  • Experience with ArcGIS Online map publishing and tools
  • Ability to keep abreast of technological developments
  • Ability to adapt to changing work requirements and priorities
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team
  • B.S. degree in an appropriate discipline
  • A minimum of six (6) years of progressive experience in GIS or software detailed design or system design - required
