G3 Mentor (SOB AOB-N)

Job Description:
The Special Operations Brigade (SOB) G3 Trainer/Mentor shall train the operational planning processes and procedures; emphasis on “operationalizing” the SOB. He will implement and operate programs, practices, and procedures for developing optimal utilization of personnel to execute Special Operations across Afghanistan. Design and administer programs to train all levels of personnel assigned to the Brigade G3 section. Develop tests and visual aids. The Trainer/Mentor will coordinate class arrangements, conduct training classes, and develop criteria for evaluating effectiveness of training activities. The Trainer/Mentor will be familiar with the targeting process, battle rhythm development/implementation, battle tracking, the Military Decision Making Process (MDMP), and any other staff related processes and procedures. Keep abreast of training and development research: learning theory, motivation theory, and new materials, methods, and techniques. Develop programs and practices to identify developmental needs including preparing personnel for more responsible positions and increasing effectiveness in present assignments. If required, may use technical experts to assist in training. Monitor training and actively assists or provide direction as needed. Create, maintain and deliver to the Team Leader and Deputy Program Manager all required reports. Provide to the Team Leader and Deputy Program Manager all required data/information for monthly performance review and training reports.

Required Hours:
Work may include nights, holidays, and weekends on short notice. Standard will be to conduct training 6 days per week for up to 10 hours per day while at OCONUS work site(s) and a standard 40 hour work week while at CONUS work sites.

  • The G3 Trainer/Mentor shall be responsible for training using Afghan National Army Special Operations Command (ANASOC) procedures.
  • The G3 Trainer Mentor will report to the Team Leader, as well as the Deputy Program Manager.
  • Trainer/Mentors will be responsible for regularly interacting with US military personnel.
  • Based on circumstances that are unique to their work locations, Trainer/Mentors will be responsible for making on the scene decisions to execute the Train, Advise, Assist, and Mentor (TAAM) mission.
  • The G3 Trainer/Mentor shall train the following tasks:
  1. Trainer/Mentor will mentor the SOB and subordinate organizations in various locations on the establishment of operational policies while developing plans and estimates including training of forward-located Mission Command Packages.
  2. Responsibilities: The G3 Trainer will primarily Train, Advise, Assist, and Mentor (TAAM) the SOB G3 in areas including but not limited to, the following: operational planning, adjacent and supporting unit coordination, assist the Chief of Staff with synchronizing the staff to support operations, integration with conventional force operations, the MDMP, targeting, staff functions/operations, and battle tracking.
  3. The G3 Trainer/Mentor will also provide presentations, assessments, and reports as required by US military leadership in support of SOB operations.
  4. The G3 Trainer/Mentor will review and provide input into MoD decrees as processes, procedures, and operational requirements evolve.
  5. The G3 Trainer/Mentor will be required to contribute regularly to the development of new concepts, techniques, and standards to integrate Afghan Special Security Forces (ASSF).
  6. The G3 Trainer/Mentor has an expeditionary role and may perform Expeditionary Train, Advise and Assist (ETAA) missions to support SOB.

Required Qualifications:
  • Former E8/O4 or higher with combat arms experience or equivalent.
  • Possess a minimum of 1 year of experience in operational planning at the Special Force Battalion/Group, Brigade Combat Team/Division level, or service equivalent.
  • Competent with operating Personal Computer skills and Microsoft Office

  • Excellent Leadership, Organizational, and Project Management Skills
  • Ability to plan and organize work, analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions.
  • Must possess a US passport with at least one year remaining eligibility
  • Must be able to obtain a Visa for Afghanistan
  • This position requires a U.S. Person who is eligible to obtain any required Export Authorization
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
  • Include but are not limited to the wear of body armor and helmet Personal Protective Gear, unassisted lifting and carrying of duffle bags not exceed the weight of 70 lbs per piece, and the unassisted movement over uneven terrain.
  • Must be willing to work and live in Afghanistan with an understanding that there could be further assignments to any location in Afghanistan based upon the needs of the U.S. Government, to include hostile and austere areas.
  • Must be able to attend and pass USG deployment requirements at CONUS Replacement Center (CRC), Fort Bliss, Texas or equivalent location.
  • Must meet the medical requirements for the position being offered as determined by a pre-employment medical screening and in accordance with published CRC and USCENTCOM medical deployment standards.
  • Must be able to walk or stand on level and/or inclined surfaces up to eight (8) hours per day and sit for up to three (3) hours per day.
  • Must be able to routinely climb / descend stairs.
  • Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows / knees, and reach above / below shoulders
  • Must be able to read and interpret newspaper and typewritten print
  • Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear
  • Employee will be required to work and live in a potentially hostile environment, at remote locations, and under austere conditions
  • May be required to respond to a wide variety of operational circumstances, under extreme weather conditions, within a hostile environment.
  • May be exposed to extreme noise from aircraft, hostile fire, and other acts of aggression associated with this region.
  • Contractor personnel shall comply with all theater command policies, regulations, and General Orders. All tours are unaccompanied
  • Refrain from using alcohol/substances inappropriately—abide by CENTCOM’s General Order #

Security Clearance Requirement: Must have a DoD SECRET security clearance

Desired Qualifications:

  • Prefer previous experience training and advising foreign military soldiers
  • 12 months experience in Afghanistan preferred
  • Previous experience as an Observer/Controller Trainer for G3 functions at a Combat Training Center
Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree from accredited school & 4 years of related experience, OR 2 years related experience with Master's degree. 8 years of additional equivalent work experience (12 total years) may be accepted in lieu of BA/BS education requirement.
