EO Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Description:

The Electrical Subsystems Directorate (ESD), EO Products and Technology Department is currently searching for a Mechanical Design Engineer to work on a multi-discipline team to design opto-mechanical and EO subsystems using the CAD tool Creo (Pro/E). Responsibilities may include concept development, detailed design, analysis, integration and test, and support of transition to production efforts. Additional duties may include factory production line support in the areas of assembly, integration, and test of uniquely complex, precision EO/IR hardware, including support of various suppliers. Candidate should be capable of leading small teams and will work closely with Integrated Product Team Leads/Program Managers ensuring engineering requirements are defined, risks are managed and schedules/budgets are met. Candidate will work under limited supervision while exercising responsibility in determining and meeting the technical, financial and schedule objectives of projects. As a Mechanical Engineer, decisions are data driven in nature and require preparing technical justification analysis reports as well as presenting to a variety of Engineering Review Boards.

Note:This position can be a (Senior Mechanical Engineer I) or a (Senior Mechanical Engineer II) based upon the applicant’s qualifications as they relate to the skills, leadership, experience and responsibility requirements of the position.

Required Skills:



· U.S Citizenship required
· 4 year’s minimum related work experience in mechanical design and design documentation
· Demonstrated experience in opto-mechanical design and technical drawing creation
· Mechanical aptitude to provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity
· Experience with Microsoft Office Suite· Proficient in 3D CAD tools (modeling and drawing)
· Proficient in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI Y14.5
· Demonstrated experience in opto-mechanical design and analysis
· Good verbal and written communication skills

Desired Skills:

· Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
· Demonstrated experience in opto-mechanical design and analysis
· Experience with Finite Element Analysis
· Experience with Matlab
· Proficient in Creo (modeling and drawing) 3D modeling CAD tools
· Industry related mechanical design and documentation experience
· Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills
· Business acumen
· Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities
· Active DoD issued security clearance


Required Education (including Major): Minimum of 4 years’ experience and Bachelor of Science, Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited curriculum preferred.

This position requires the ability to obtain and hold a DoD secret security clearance.

This position requires the successful issuance, transfer or maintenance of any clearances and/or accesses necessary for the position. Non-US citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance. The Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office (DISCO), an agency of the Department of Defense, handles and adjudicates the security clearance process. Security clearance factors include, but are not limited to, allegiance to the US, foreign influence, foreign preference, criminal conduct, security violations and drug involvement.
