Engineering Fellow - Lethal Effects

The Engineering Fellow position is in the Energetics and Propulsion Department of the Mechanical Subsystems Directorate. The successful Lethal Effects Engineer will have demonstrated competency in energetics technologies:

The primary area of technical focus and responsibility is Lethal Mechanisms. The duties include defining “target defeat mechanism” to produce required “lethal effect” on target. In this role, the Lethal Effects Engineer establishes warhead subsystem architecture and functional modes of operation and develops warhead subsystem development specifications. There is also a subsystem focus: blast & fragmentation warheads, penetrator-forming warheads, kinetic-energy penetrators, hard-target penetrators and multi-warhead systems.

Supporting areas of technical focus includes these areas:

Energetics System Design: Develops overall system requirements. Defines functional modes of operation and subsystem requirements: end-game kinematics, timing, structural, and power and ensures energetics subsystem implementation meets requirements and achieves required performance.

Computational Mechanics: Provides direction and oversight of energetics subsystem computations from energetic thermochemistry, low-rate reaction “ballistics” analyses, high-rate “hydrocode” reactions (detonation & shock physics/explosion dynamics/penetration mechanics/impact dynamics/target kinematics), lethality & effectiveness analyses, and weapon threat vulnerability sensitivity (Insensitive Munitions) analyses.

Fuzing & Safety Devices: Have an understanding of weapon safety/arming environments and safety system functional architectures. Works in support of Safety Engineering in developing safety subsystem development specifications.

Firing Trains: Have and understanding of Electro-Explosive Devices (EEDs).

Energetics Technologies: Experience in, and ability to lead energetics process technology/explosive qualification including energetic materials mixing/casting loading, explosive consolidation, energetics machining, ultra precision propulsion/warhead component manufacturing, refractory and ballistic materials metallurgy and manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities (essential functions):
Apply and/or develop advanced warhead technologies using scientific principles, theories and concepts to the weapon warhead system for implementation into missiles

Provide technical oversight to the subcontractor

Review and disposition subcontract data and change requests; prepare and present data to management, government agencies; and project cost account management

Support the Safety Engineering organization by planning and performing insensitive munitions testing and safety analyses as needed

Frequently work with the Customer to identify user needs

Manage subcontract suppliers to specify and deliver required subsystem components on schedule and on budget

Develop warhead strategic and technology development roadmaps

Lead development of design concepts for target defeat mechanisms (warheads)

Design, analyze, test and evaluate warhead systems

Perform warhead system/component design

Provide technical oversight of subcontracted design activities and technical direction to warhead engineers

Support failure analysis and corrective action through redesign of failed warhead component or system

Present warhead design models and supporting analyses/test results to internal and customer review meetings

Support proposals requiring warhead technologies

Provide guidance and mentoring for more junior members of the Department

Lead development of Critical Item Development Specifications (CIDS)

Handle fact-finding and contract negotiations

Test data reduction

Generate warhead performance data files for use in performance assessments and requirements compliance

Ensure technical rigor and depth of all deliverables

Required Experience and Skills:
  • A minimum of 12 years of experience in warhead engineering or equivalent
  • Have demonstrated knowledge of / experience in:
    • Engineering design in development project
    • Lethal effects and Warhead or Energetic Device Design & Analyses
    • Design and analysis of mechanical subsystems
    • Ordnance manufacturing process technologies
    • Insensitive Munitions mitigation technology (design, materials)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, Power Point & Project)
  • Project Management as applied to team interaction and deliverables
  • Technical management of subcontracts on Government programs
  • Systems architecture as warhead subsystem designer
  • Development of warhead Technical Performance Measures (TPM), Key Product Characteristics (KPC), Key Characteristic Control (KCC)
  • Co-development of threat defeat requirements from system lethality analyses and validating design lethality implementation in flight simulators
  • Proposal and cost preparation, requirements definition, and warhead subsystems analysis, test and verification; operational test support; supplier collaboration
  • Warhead subsystem technology readiness level (TRL) maturation
  • Validation and verification of lethality elements in system performance modeling from development and qualification tests of subsystems
  • Be willing to travel to suppliers and government facilities
  • Currently have or be able to obtain a DoD issued Secret security clearance
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment

Degree Requirements:
Bachelor of Science General, Aerospace, Design, Mechanical or Systems Engineering; Applied Physics

Desired Experience and Skills:
  • 25 years of directly related experience in warhead subsystems design, development, and test
  • Supplier collaboration experience and oversight generating specifications and statements of work (SOW)
  • Experience in business development and technology road mapping
  • Demonstrated success as a team leader
  • Advanced engineering degree (M.S., PhD.)
