Engineering Fellow Detector Physicist - EO

Job Description:

The Product Technology Center in the Electrical Subsystems Directorate is seeking an electro-optical detector technologist Engineering Fellow that is responsible for electro-optical detection devices used at Raytheon Missile Systems (RMS). The selected candidate will lead RMS detector teams and work closely with detector suppliers and RMS Engineers, while supporting the development, implementation, verification, and maintenance of electro-optical detection components and applications. In addition, working closely with RMS detector suppliers and across Product Lines, they will help shape the detector development strategy for RMS, including road maps for Product Lines and new technologies such as materials and read-out integrated circuits.

The selected candidate will be required to effectively interact with engineers across multiple disciplines including cryogenics, opto-mechanics, optics, and electro-optical systems and systems engineers in the development and support of RMS products. The selected candidate will be expected to effectively present their work in program and Business Unit reviews and to provide expert counseling and mentoring. They will be expected to lead diverse teams, providing technical oversight and task delegation. The customers of this position will include internal Raytheon personnel and programs as well as external Government(s) personnel and programs. The selected candidate will work with the customer and engineering leadership to define design requirements to validate and to verify that hardware being designed is compliant with requirements.

As a fellow, it is expected that the candidate work across Product Lines and Business Units as critical needs dictate of the Enterprise. Additionally, the Fellow will seek out and establish apprenticeships to enable a teaching culture at Raytheon Missile Systems. In this position, they must have exhibited a proven track record with national recognition of an electro-optical detection system architecture mindset in developing detection products and working across a product’s life cycle. The candidate of choice will encompass a history of design innovation validated by patents and technical papers, serving as the expert through integration and qualification of electro-optical detection devices, and leading Failure Investigation Teams in resolution to complex production sustainment issues and / or detection anomalies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the selection of detection solutions for RMS electro-optical products.
  • Lead detector teams and oversee supplier activities
  • Support the development, implementation, verification and maintenance of electro-optical detection components.
  • Support development and implementation of video processing methodologies and algorithms in conjunction with detection selections.
  • Support trade studies on various detection device parameters such as optical collection efficiency, detector sensitivity, spectral band selection, etc.
  • Support the development and implementation of supplier and RMS electro-optical subsystem test and verification of detection related requirements.
  • Identify strategic electro-optical detection development opportunities
  • Propose and coordinate independent research and development (IRAD) projects for the advancement of detection devices across programs and product suppliers
  • Ensure balance of risk, performance, and cost
  • Be accountable to leadership for technical decisions
  • Participate in major technical review boards, e.g., Failure Review Board
  • Communicate and collaborate with Program Management and Technical Leadership, Engineering Leadership, Manufacturing, Suppliers, and Customers.
  • Guide, apprentice, mentor, and train employees within the electro-optical detection area
Required Skills/Experience:
  • A minimum of 12 years of electro-optical detection device experience from ultra-violet (0.3 um) through Long-Wave Infrared (14 um).
  • Demonstrated application of knowledge in detector physics, material properties, and fabrication processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of detector material defects and temporal noise processes including methods for mitigating impact on electro-optical seeker performance.
  • Familiarity with Read-Out Integrated Circuit (ROIC) operation and ability to trade / balance ROIC functionality, detector material selection, Sensor Chip Assembly (SCA) thermal control, and video processing algorithm capabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of aging and environment related electro-optical detection changes.
  • Demonstrated innovative leadership skills, such as patents, publications, etc
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication ability to leadership
  • Responsible for providing guidance, coaching / mentoring and training to other employees across the business within area of expertise.
  • Existing, or the ability to obtain, a DoD issued Secret Security Clearance.
Required Education (including Major):
  • BS in Physics, Material Sciences or other related engineering field
Desired Skills:
  • MS or PhD in Physics, Material Sciences or other related engineering field
  • Prior active participation in a mentorship or coaching program involving several junior or mid-level engineers
  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Matlab tools
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead teams
  • Demonstrated ability to influence others to achieve technical and programmatic goals
  • Demonstrated proactive problem-solving experience
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a business strategic vision and execute changes
  • Working knowledge of C or C++
  • Experience within the aerospace industry
  • Active DoD issued security clearance
