We have an opening for a customer-oriented Engineering Design Associate to perform the duties of a security alarm station designer and estimator.   You will define project requirements, conceptual designs and develop cost estimates. The Alarms and Access Control Group (AACG) is responsible for selecting, implementing, operating and maintaining the field systems associated with physical security at LLNL. Field systems are all system components (hardware and software). The AACG also supports auxiliary equipment such as portals and explosive detectors. This position is in the AACG within the Security Organization.
Essential Duties
- Apply innovative technical expertise to develop complex conceptual and detailed designs for the field components of the Argus Security System. Responsible for ensuring designs are consistent with relevant standards and requirements, including NEPA, NFPA, Safeguards and Security Engineering and Computations (SSEC) Policies and Procedures and other Laboratory requirements.
- Develop and implement advanced technical and administrative solutions to physical security issues and insure completion of project requirements in collaboration with engineers, security administration, electricians and high-level technical personnel.
- Create new, and modify existing, designs for security alarm stations using the Argus Configuration Database and User Interface (DBUI).
- Develop and present estimates for budgets, schedules and manpower needs to Security Program Representatives, Security Administrators, scientific staff and management for AACG job order requests.
- Develop sketches, site drawings, building drawings and mechanical and electrical schematics and details using AutoCAD, Visio or the latest CAD software. Design electrical wire way systems and branch conduits and electronic circuits to support security systems and applications.
- Responsible for ensuring during the design phase that all installation tasks can be performed in accordance with ES&H regulations and procedures, Integrated Safety and Security policies and within Property Management guidelines.
- Perform Argus Map Administrator functions to maintain security system background drawings utilizing AutoCAD drawing libraries and compiling drawings for presentation on Dispatcher consoles.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in design/drafting technology, electrical technology or the equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training.
- Significant experience in the design, installation, maintenance and use of control systems and associated components.Advanced knowledge of electronics, electrical power, and complex distributed control systems, components and communications methods.
- Experience in identifying, analyzing and providing solutions and alternative approaches to complex design problems.
- Advanced knowledge, and demonstrated experience, applying drafting practices and techniques to develop sketches, prints and schematics and ability to provide clear and concise verbal and written instructions.
- Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with a variety of personnel and the ability to use tact, diplomacy and discretion when dealing with customers.
- Advanced knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and OSHA Safety Regulations used to perform tasks in compliance with Environmental, Safety & Health regulations.
- Advanced knowledge of, and significant experience applying, AutoCAD to prepare site, building and electrical drawings. Knowledge of computers and software, including MS Office products and FileMaker Pro to create reports, spreadsheets and drawings.
- Ability to secure and maintain certification in the Human Reliability Program (HRP) which includes: polygraph examination; and physical and psychological assessment; and random drug and alcohol testing.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
