Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems is seeking a highly qualified, mission oriented individual as a Director, Advanced Threat Research to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be locatedin Redondo Beach, CA.


The Director of Advanced Threat Research and Modeling (ATR&M) will report to the Director of Systems Analysis & Simulation (SA&S) for the Aerospace Systems Sector, and will be responsible for directing all aspects of the ATR&M organization, including staffing, planning, coordinating, and directing applied resources. The ATR&M director will lead a diverse, multi-discipline team of technical experts and threat analysts focused on developing future threat scenarios, new threat models and/or simulations, and conducting analysis of integrated threat capabilities to assess the impact on U.S. mission operations to drive future system and technology development efforts. Threat information and derived analytical results will establish a well-documented threat baseline that will be used by our programs and analysis teams across the Company to evaluate future architectures and system capabilities in stressing threat scenarios. This common threat baseline will also be used to inform Company strategy, shape future program pursuits and assist in developing discriminating concepts to win new business.

Responsibilities:

  • Cost, schedule and technical performance of all ATR&M research and model development efforts, as well as threat analysis support to strategic studies, Contract Research and Development (CRAD) efforts, new business pursuits, and major programs as required.
  • Develops Statements of Work (SOW), establishes cost estimates and analysis milestones, monitors adherence to analysis plans and schedules, identifies execution risks and opportunities, and develops solutions, such as allocation of resources, changing technical approaches, and/or tailoring requirements.
  • Responsible for technical direction and guidance to the work of employees assigned to ATR&M from supporting engineering, technical and administrative areas.

The ATR&M Director will enable full-spectrum threat analysis capabilities in support of key business functions, including annual threat assessments, threat impact analysis to core programs, new threat and/or technology phenomena development, future threat and force deployment projections for new system concept evaluation. Will also develop integrated threat scenarios derived from National Intelligence sources, competitive assessment and capture, and program advocacy campaigns.

  • Establishes analytical approaches and design-of-experiment constructs to test, evaluate and assess emerging space architectures, system design concepts, evolving Concepts of Operation (CONOPS), new technology development, and engineering efforts for product research, development, integration and test.
  • Acts as a primary customer interface for communicating adversary threat effects and their impact to critical U.S. mission operations, measuring threat performance, defining adversary concepts of operation, and leading program reviews on adversary threat capabilities with customers.
  • Develops relationships with National foreign threat intelligence agencies, Industry Partners, and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDC's) to share threat intelligence information, advance our threat models and analysis, and expand our credibility with the customer.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM)
  • Minimum 10 years' combined experience researching, modeling, analyzing, and/or developing advanced threat simulations related to adversary air, space, and missile systems, and related technologies
  • 5 years experience with foreign Integrated Air Defense Systems (IADS) and their impact to U.S. Operations, including air surveillance radars, surface to air missiles, air-to-air missiles, passive electronic surveillance systems, airborne surveillance and tracking systems, command and control systems, and tracking and battle management systems
  • 3 years' experience interfacing with Program Managers, Chief Engineers, and/or senior U.S. Government officials on complex threat systems and related capabilities and effects
  • Strong working knowledge of counter-space threats, associated kill-chains and their impact on U.S. space capabilities
  • Team leadership experience with the ability to cultivate, lead, develop and grow a diverse, multi-discipline team of technical experts to research, analyze, model, and develop physics-based simulations of advanced threat systems
  • Active Top-Secret/SCI security clearance
  • An in-scope/current SSBI investigation
  • Must be able to obtain access to Special Access Programs (SAP)
  • Must be willing to submit to a recurring Counter Intelligence polygraph examination
  • Must be willing to travel as required to meet customer requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or Applied Physics
  • Master's Degree in one of the following: Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, or Applied Physics
  • Military and/or Combat Operations experience is highly desired
  • Technical assignment in, or significant technical experience with National foreign threat intelligence agencies, including WINPAC, NASIC, MSIC, NGIC, DIA, ONI, and/or related organizations is highly desired
  • Strong working knowledge of both U.S. Government developed and internal threat modeling and analysis tools, including, but not limited to ESAMS, BRAWLER, SUPPRESSOR, AFSIM, THORN, RADET, NGSVTS, ETHB, Satellite Tool Kit (STK), MATLAB/Simulink, or Python is highly desired
  • Strong working knowledge of Low Observable technologies
  • Strong working knowledge of foreign threat countermeasure approaches
  • Strong working knowledge of Space Protection design approaches, tactics, and on-orbit operations is highly desired
