The Nuclear Science & Technology (NS&T) directorate at Idaho National Laboratory has a challenging and rewarding opportunity available! NS&T is seeking the next leader for its Post Irradiation Examination & Project Execution department.

As Department Manager, you will provide strategic leadership and management for the Post Irradiation Examination & Project Execution department in the Nuclear Fuels & Materials division. The department is responsible for managing research projects that perform non-destructive and destructive post irradiation examinations (PIE) at the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC). The department also coordinates and manages the supply of fresh fuel to US research reactors (e.g. MIT, MURR, ATR) as well as the return of spent fuel to the Savannah River site and execution of various project support elements. Work is conducted in support of nuclear energy research programs, which include the Advanced Fuels Campaign, Advanced Reactor Technologies, Nuclear Science User Facilities, US High Performance Research Reactors, DOE Research Reactor Infrastructure and ATR Fuel Management projects, Work for Others, and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements.

Further, you will direct and oversee department personnel, make work assignments in accordance with expertise and project complexity, conduct regular status updates on projects, and report progress or challenges to division management on a regular basis. Ensuring that regular and clear communication, oversight, and coordination between program technical leads, researchers, and facility personnel will be a important function of your duties. You will also perform all necessary personnel management activities within the department including recruiting, training, professional development, performance appraisals, salary reviews, promotions, etc.

You will also be responsible for ensuring that all work is conducted in accordance with division standards of practice, that goals and objectives of the division are clearly communicated within the department, and that every reasonable and prudent effort is taken to meet milestones and commitments. To support program integration efforts, you will ensure work is appropriately planned, scheduled, and conducted in MFC facilities by routinely interacting with and collaborating with Facility Mission Directors.

You will have a working knowledge of MFC facilities and capabilities, including the specialized laboratories and the functions they perform and of the various tools used in PIE and the attendant technical considerations that apply. This includes familiarity with the appropriate application and limitations of equipment. Broad knowledge of fuel performance issues is highly desirable.
As a leader in the NS&T directorate, the department manager is responsible for creating a culture of collaboration, innovation, inclusion, and diversity, with a persistent focus toward professional development. You will collaborate with leaders across the laboratory complex to leverage the full resources of the DOE, as well as industry and university partners, to accelerate innovation in nuclear.

This position requires the selected candidate to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE level L security clearance; therefore, US citizenship is required.

BS degree in science or engineering. An advanced degree (MS or PhD) is highly desirable.

At least 5 years applicable experience in nuclear fuels R&D.

Experience with post irradiation examinations of nuclear fuels/materials and familiarity with INL facilities is strongly preferred.

Experience in organizing technical work, program management, and staffing.

Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Must be able to work in a culturally diverse environment.
