Data Architect


Job Description:

Leidos is seeking candidates for the position of Data Architect supporting the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Data Warehouse (HDW) in Bethesda, MD.

As the Nation’s public health agency, HRSA’s mission is to provide direct and indirect resources to administer to the health care needs of the medically under-served in the United States. In order to do so, HRSA requires extensive data on population, income, existing health care resources, the health workforce, as well as various other types of contextual data. Data are stored in the HDW repository and published to the HRSA intranet and the internet via numerous web applications, mobile applications, business intelligence dashboards, data services, and other mechanisms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure consistency, quality, and accuracy of the data mapped from staging environments to the target reporting environments
  • Develop ETL audits and controls to ensure quality of data meets or exceeds defined standards and thresholds defined by the business customer
  • Work closely with the Data SME, customers, and end users to translate business requirements into technical designs to map and load data from source systems to the data warehouse
  • Communicate and accurately document all architectural decisions, plans, goals, and functional requirements
  • Maintain metadata with data definitions, relationships, sources, and lineage
  • Possess or have the ability to learn how to architect and support our Tableau enterprise BI environment
  • Prepare and maintain strong technical documentation
  • Attention to detail, creative problem solving abilities, and coaching and influencing skills are a must
  • SQL Server 2012+ (experience leading SQL upgrade efforts a plus)
  • Configure and maintain database servers and processes, including monitoring of system health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security.
  • Help team provide problem resolution support for existing production ETL jobs which includes on-call rotation
  • Perform DBA functions to optimize database performance

Architecture Responsibilities:

  • Develop ETL audits and controls to ensure quality of data meets or exceeds defined standards and thresholds defined by the business customer
  • Engage stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical designs to map and load data from source systems to the data warehouse
  • Communicate and accurately document all architectural decisions, plans, goals, and functional requirements
  • Responsible for the data architectural design and compliance of solutions
  • Approval of detailed data designs and vendor data designs to ensure the adherence to enterprise standards
  • Reduce complexity and increase re-usability
  • Drives down costs and complexity by using enterprise standards
  • Designs data solutions that meet the best interest of multiple stakeholders including those of the project and enterprise level
  • Designs solutions that leverage enterprise tools and have reusable components and services
  • Works with business users to reduce technical data complexity introduced by business requirements
  • Ensures data designs meet business requirements
  • Develops strategies for data acquisitions, archive recovery, and implementation of databases
  • Logical design of Databases, Data Warehouses and Multidimensional Databases including data flows, conception model and logical models
  • Creating strategy and recommendations on future data and technology policies
  • Establish Data Architecture Design Patterns and best practices
  • Forward thinking on new technologies and patterns

Technology Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Works collaboratively to provide technical leadership and directs teams in the delivery of technology solutions
  • Ensures the realization of the solution architecture, making sure it is operable & cost-effective
  • Provides thought leadership for future-looking data management concepts
  • Ensures technical requirements are delivered with quality and completeness through peer reviews
  • Assesses risks, anticipates bottlenecks, provide escalation management, and collaborates to drive toward mutually beneficial outcomes

The candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 10 years' experience as a Data Architect with extensive knowledge of data warehouse and BI techniques. The candidate needs leadership and strong communication skills to influence architecture and design decisions and good communication and interpersonal skills to work with customers and end users.


  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent understanding of ETL development with Sequel Server Integration Services (SSIS)
  • Communications and presentation skills including ability to communicate data concepts to business users
  • Strong understanding of data governance
  • Data Security knowledge
  • Data Analysis with a degree of creativity and lateral thinking is expected
  • Experience creating data models using Idera ER/Studio software or other modeling software
  • Metadata creation, maintenance, and management
  • Strong foundation of data integration/data warehousing concepts necessary
  • A background in computer science and database management
