Computational Physicist

Science and Technology on a Mission!
For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a code developer and analyst. You will create or adapt state-of-the-art computational physics and computational geosciences algorithms, ensure the fidelity and performance of their implementation, and support their usage by multiple teams on demanding classes of problems. This position is in the Computational Geosciences group of the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division which also provides support to Weapons and Complex Integration programs.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Create or identify state-of-the-art computational physics and computational geosciences algorithms that extend modeling capabilities, implement as software suitable for high-performance computers, and document their verification.
- Establish expertise in using one or more finite elements, finite differences and finite volume based simulation tools such as Geodyn, Geodyn-L, ALE3D or elastic wave propagation codes.
- Evaluate moderately complex to complex algorithms for current and future problem classes, developing a body of experience with which to guide users and establish strategies for future improvements.
- Interact with users to assess software performance and provide solutions for moderately complex to complex issues of modeling or software errors.
- Adapt software development and QA practices and contribute to their continuous improvement.
- Document research in technical reports, publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results at scientific meetings and conferences.
- Apply existing and newly developed codes and analyze results of non-linear shockwave problems, compressible fluids and structural damages.
- Conduct presentations to internal and external collaborators.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Provide solutions to complex problems that require in-depth analysis and the creative use of established and/or innovative methods.
- Propose, contrive, and conduct high-level briefings to senior management and government sponsors.
- Propose and execute major studies to substantiate programmatic goals.

- MS in engineering, physics or applied mathematics with a computational shock physics focus desired, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of one or more of computational physics, mechanics, geosciences and the theory and application of finite element methods, finite volumes and finite differences for non-linear shocks in compressible media.
- Proficiency in Fortran or C/C++ programming and fluent in Python & shells.
- Broad experience in at least one of the following topical areas: advanced spatial discretization for large deformation response, advanced representations of nonlinear response of geological materials, coupled multi-physics simulation, including fluid-structures and shock-structures interaction.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Ability to travel and conduct presentations to external collaborators and sponsors under short notice.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- PhD in engineering, physics or applied mathematics with a computational shock physics focus desired.
- Advanced knowledge and/or experience of computational physics, mechanics, geosciences and the theory and application of finite element methods, finite volumes and finite differences for non-linear shocks in compressible media, and significant experience providing solutions to complex scientific and/or technical problems that require in-depth analysis and demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.
- Advanced knowledge of implicit and explicit schemes for solving wave propagation problems on HPC using OpenMP and MPI platforms.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with software implementations on parallel systems.
- Knowledge of numerical methods for nonlinear solid and fluid interactions.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
