Responsibilities

The Materials andFuels Complex (MFC) at Idaho National Laboratory is searching for its next ChiefScientist who will report directly to the MFC Associate Laboratory Director. TheChief Scientist is a recognized expert in the field of nuclear engineeringresearch and development.


INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for the Departmentof Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE). We provide nuclear research,development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear science andtechnology innovation forward to deployment.


As the designated leader for the National Reactor InnovationCenter (NRIC), INL serves as the nation’s bridge between research, development,and demonstration (RD&D) and commercial deployment of new nuclear fuel andmaterials. MFC’s unique combination of personnel, facilities, andinfrastructure offer the ability to perform R&D of nuclear fuels fromdesign, development, fabrication, and testing through post irradiationanalysis. MFC also operates two reactors and has the capability to host reactordemonstration projects.


Your role will include the following:


Serve a primary role in the continuing transformation of MFCto a more effective nuclear energy R&D organization by providing technicalleadership in several key areas: the modernization of research capability,recruitment and development of a world class cadre of engineers and scientists,and fostering a science culture and standards which result in a profound impacton deployment of advanced nuclear technology.


Leads MFC initiatives to expand use of other national userfacilities for research on radioactive materials and to develop new routes forcollaborative research with industry and university partners.


Connect with INL’s Nuclear Science & Technology(NS&T) and Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) organizations to deliver exceptionaloutcomes.


Develop collaborations with industrial partners and leadingU.S. and international universities and laboratories, including universitiesassociated with the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) and the INLNuclear University Consortium (NUC).


Stay ahead of U.S. nuclear industry trends and advise theMFC Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) on scientific matters. Provide recommendationson future growth areas that support industry needs


Provide recommendations to MFC management on identifying andevaluating MFC research capabilities which will help strengthen proposals, keytechnologies, and investment strategies directed toward laboratory growth.


Provide advice to MFC staff in the development of nuclearfuels, radiation-tolerant materials, fuel recycling, and focused basicresearch. Ensure that the basic research program sets the stage for advances inthe fundamental understanding of the underlying physics and chemistry ofmaterial behavior in the nuclear environment. Ensure that experimental resultsare effectively coupled with modeling and simulation tools to provide acontinuous cycle of code validation and increased understanding.


Represent MFC within INL for post-doctoral programs, theGraduate Fellowship Program, the Intern program, and as needed for theLaboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) Program.


Collaborate with technical experts working in MFC facilitiesin the critical areas of nuclear nonproliferation, physical security, andnuclear forensics.


Ensure partnerships are established to achieve RD&Dgoals and attract new scientists and engineers to meet research and developmentneeds


Assist in recruiting qualified researchers. Establish andmonitor mentoring system for inexperienced staff.


Responsible for continuous improvement in the quality ofresearch data generated at MFC through development of new instruments andmethods of standardization and implementation of data review and acceptanceprotocols.


Must be a US Citizen and be able to obtain and maintain aDepartment of Energy (DOE) security clearance.


Master’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering, MaterialsScience/Engineering, or another closely related field and 15 years of relevantexperience or a PhD and 10 years of relevant experience. A PhD is highlypreferred.


Required Skills and Experience:


Proven leadership in nuclear research and development


Experience leading a nuclear R&D organization


A solid understanding of how R&D is performed at industrialor government institutions


Relationship building through skilled negotiation andcommunication


The ability to clearly communicate and explain complexconcepts and prepare written reports and technical publications

that are clear,concise, and meaningful.


The ability to work with employees, management, advisorycouncils, and DOE to resolve complex issues and to develop impactful strategiesand executable plans.


Preferred:


Current or past leadership position in a professional society(e.g., American Nuclear Society)


Experience in national technical leadership roles


Selective Service Requirements
