Cartographer / GIS Analyst

Job Description

GIS Analyst/Programmer working with US Forest Service processing data for national lands projects involving vegetation, watershed and other projects.  Work on this project requires knowledge of and demonstrated skill in the use of the following software: ESRI GIS products such as ArcGIS, Arc SDE, and use of databases including SQL and Access (Microsoft) databases. Oracle is a plus.  Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and InDesign are essential.


Exciting position in Vallejo CA, supports various Forest Service areas.  Job involves graphic artist skills, knowledge of large format printing, and pre-press printing processes. GIS skills involve processing spatial and tabular data, data manipulation with ArcGIS, extensions, standard toolboxes and python programming. Will provide Quality Control support of National Applications GIS Data and other Data. Databases include working with customized SQL. 


Responsible for GIS programming with ArcGIS and extensions.  Designing, planning, implementing and administering GIS software and databases, including security, access, and documentation.


  • Participates in the design, maintenance, enhancement, coding, and administration of software and relational databases.
  • Analyzes and determines information needs and elements, data relationships and attributes, data flow and storage requirements, and data output and reporting capabilities.
  • Coordinates new data development ensuring consistency and integration with existing data warehouse structure.  Uses data from US Forest Service Enterprise data sources.
  • Participates in continuous improvement efforts in enhancing performance and providing increased functionality, including performing proactive maintenance such as ensuring continued space availability, monitoring activity, and documenting problems, changes, and solutions.
  • Tests designed applications, validates data.
  • Assignments may include design of data dictionaries, database structure and layout, installing, upgrading, and managing database applications.
  • Stay current on best security practices in relation to organizational requirements.
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant technologies as assigned.
  • Participates in special projects as required.
  • Utilizes map files to create brochures, pamphlets, reports, PowerPoint 


  • Minimum 5 years involved in GIS.
  • Prefer Bachelors in a Geography, Forest Mgt, Remote Sensing, Land Management, Earth Sci, Wildlife Biology, OR
  • Alternative is Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/programmer with 5 years relevant Geography or related type of programs, and GIS Certification, OR
  • Associated Degree or High School diploma and 15 years experience, Plus ArcGIS Certification





Minimum of 5 years of related to GIS map software, GIS database, other data sources (SQL scripts, oracle), graphic arts, cartography, and/or administration experience.
