Business Area Manager -- Image Metrology

Adaptive Optics Associates, Inc., (AOA-Xinetics) a wholly-owned Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems (NGAS) strategic business unit, is currently seeking a Business Area Manager to lead its Image Metrology Business Area.

AOA-Xinetics Image Metrology designs, develops, and produces precision measurement products for commercial industrial customers, U.S. Government, and U.S. defense prime and second-tier contractors. Markets for these products include transportation logistics, package handling, and semiconductor tools. Several potential direct and adjacent application areas also exist.
Position Description:The Business Area Manager will report directly to the AOA-Xinetics General Manager. The position provides a broad, exciting leadership opportunity in a high-growth, strategically important businesses for Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems. The Business Area Manager has profit and loss responsibility for the Image Metrology business area (one of three business areas within AOA-Xinetics). In conjunction with the General Manager, he/she will set strategy and identify and implement business development projects relating to new products and programs. He/she will be responsible for all aspects of the business area including business development program, product management, engineering and production. In addition, he/she will be responsible for the day-to-day operations associated with the Image Metrology business area.We are looking for a proven, successful leader with exceptional people skills, one who is valued by customers and employees alike. He/she must be highly influential in conversation and have a record of collaborative approach with peers/peer organizations.Direct Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for profit and loss for the Image Metrology business area; ensure that the business area operates within its financial budget and ensure financial goals are met
  • Leads through change and adversity, makes the tough call when needed, builds consensus when appropriate, motivates and encourages others
  • Holds self and others accountable for performance and achievement of goals
  • Manages a staff comprised of business development, program & product management, engineering and production functions
  • Builds customer confidence and is committed to increasing customer satisfaction by setting achievable expectations, assuming responsibility for solving problems, ensuring commitments are met in a timely manner and soliciting customer feedback and ideas
  • Leads business development effort for business area through the development of capture plans; win strategies and price-to-win approaches
  • Oversees projects and programs to ensure that they are completed in accordance with contract technical requirements, milestones and budgets
  • Sets challenging and productive goals for the team, holds them accountable for actions, provides leadership and motivation, provides resources and support, uses checkpoints and data to track progress, and sets up systems and processes to measure results
  • Plans, reviews and presents annual budget, and forecasts and monthly financial summaries
  • Assists in recruiting, hiring, training and managing program, product and functional engineering managers, engineers and production personnel and other key positions
  • Provides compensation recommendations for employees in the business area
  • Ensures that employees working in the Business Area receive mentoring and career advancement opportunities
  • Drives employee accountability with regard to a safe work environment, quality and operating efficiencies
  • Promotes a respect for safety, supports safety programs, policies/procedures, takes preventative and corrective action to address potential safety hazards and prevent future injuries
  • Contributes to AOA-Xinetics strategic planning
  • Works closely with AOA-Xinetics leadership and compliance functions to ensure full compliance with division, corporate, and government policies
  • Represents the company directly with customers when required
  • Effectively communicates progress to customers, senior leadership and company-wide audiences
Working Environment & Physical Demands:
  • Position is located in Cambridge, MA
  • Travel to customer (military, industry) facilities and offices with limited international travel
  • Travel multiple times per year (~25% business travel)
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of times and light physical effort required

Required Qualifications:
  • > 8 years of profit and loss experience
  • B.S. degree in Engineering and >10 years’ experience in the optical and electro-optical sensors and systems market for industrial, defense and scientific markets
  • Leadership skills required to develop, organize and execute significant development activities, including building internal/external teams, assessing risks and opportunities, and executing programs and production
  • Ability to think innovatively and creatively
  • Strong personal relationships in the metrology and logistic markets
  • Impeccable ethics; leads by example and fosters ethical behavior at all times; maintains a positive and professional working environment
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to gain internal support, operate independently with limited supervision and feedback, and the ability to establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, functional managers, and peers
  • Experience in full life-cycle product development and management
  • Clear, concise oral and written communication skills
  • Good working knowledge of desktop/laptop computers, MSOffice tools, VPN, MSProject
  • Ability to meet requirements to obtain a security clearance to the Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) level
Preferred Qualifications:
  • An MBA degree and/or a PhD in a technical discipline
