The Comparative Pathology Branch of the Research Support Division provides the USAISR with a centralized laboratory for the analysis of research specimens from protocols related to varying aspects of battlefield trauma, burns, and combat casualty care. The protocols range from basic research, defining the effects of injury, to treatment modalities. The objective of the Comparative Pathology Branch is to provide the investigators with the highest quality data from routine laboratory testing of specimens and to leverage the latest methodologies to meet the needs of the investigators. All research is conducted in accordance with current regulatory standards of research.

Job Description:

Cherokee Nation Technology Solutions (CNTS) is seekng a Biomedical Research Technician will provide laboratory research support to the Coagulation and Blood research and Damage Control Resuscitation Task area. This position will provide assay support while maintaining knowledge of current assays and models for research and contribute to publications. Maintain supplies, equipment, and safe working environment. Assist with reference collection, organization, and editing of research reports, posters, and manuscripts. Securely maintain research documentation in accordance with local policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Deliverables):

Includes the following (Other duties may be assigned):

  • Laboratory and animal research support as related to the combat casualty care mission and Requirements of resuscitation, blood, and hemostasis research.
  • Attains or maintains an understanding of the theory behind all research procedures performed.
  • Remains current in field proficiency, to include active participation towards research publication in open literature.
  • Assisting with reference collection, organizing and editing research reports, posters and manuscripts.
  • Maintains all required materials and supplies in the laboratory, surgery, and storage area
  • Provides maintenance of equipment and supplies in a safe secure manner.
  • Generates orders for equipment and supplies required for research.
  • Assists supervisor or hand receipt holder with inventories for medical maintenance, and generates work orders on equipment when needed.
  • Responsible for collects, processes, and stores biological specimens including but not limited to the following tests: ABG, CBC, spun HCT, TEG, ROTEM, fibrinogen, PT, aPTT, cytokines, oxidants, RNA, complement, clinical chemistries.
  • Performs laboratory procedures and analyses on specimens and samples from animal patients and research subjects, as well as from other sources including enzyme assays, enzyme linkedimmunoassays, immunoelectrophoresis, HPLC, flow cytometry, molecular biology, and cell culture.
  • Provide technical assistance to investigators and protocols as requested.
  • Prepares solutions, drugs and reagents for experiments.
  • Maintains safe working environment and work area.
  • Provides General Lab Maintenance
  • Provides Technical Lab Support
  • Provides assistance with perioperative procedures
  • Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains all instruments and equipment in the surgery area.
  • Prepares catheters and other devices for use in sterile procedures.
  • Conducts daily calibration of monitoring equipment and analog-to-digital data collection system.
  • Prepares animal orders and schedules operating rooms, vivarium, and veterinary support.

 

Supervisory/Management Authority:

This position has no supervisory/management authority.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must have a Public Trust clearance or be able to obtain one
  • BS or BA degree in the biological sciences or in science related field
  • 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Preferred - ALACC accreditation for working with laboratory animals

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  (example: specific software, soft skills, etc. – This gets deleted)

  • Team player, people skills and ability to communicate effectively with in an academically diverse team of scientists and military personnel.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
  • Must have skills and experience in biomedical research to include animal surgery, data entry into spreadsheets, and biochemical assays.
  • Abilities to learn new methods and techniques as research foci evolve.
  • Assists with sterile surgical procedures on large and small animals, to include placement of carotid and femoral catheters, open chest and abdominal surgery to place flow probes around vessels, catheterize the heart, implant telemetry devices into vessels, implant Swan-Ganz catheters, implant other specialty catheters, perform splenectomies, place EKG leads, and perform microsurgery on rodents.
  • Assists with instrumentation, monitoring, surgical preparation, care and observation during recovery, administration of experimental treatments, sample collection, and observation associated with the collection of research data.
  • Skill in assisting in necropsy, tissue collection, tissue preservation, and carcass disposal of experimental animals.
  • Skills in preparing catheters and other devices for use in sterile procedures.
  • Conducts daily calibration of monitoring equipment and analog-to-digital data collection system.
  • Prepares animal orders and schedules operating rooms, vivarium, and veterinary support.
  • Team player, people skills and ability to communicate effectively with in an academically diverse team of scientists and military personnel.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The duties of this position are primarily performed in a climate controlled 100% secured office environment. It site right next to large military hospital. Within this building we do conduct animal reach. All successful candidate will have to meet the USAISR Health requirements. New hire will comply with safety procedures and infection control/occupational health procedures pertaining to the entire ISR facility, but in particular to the laboratory, vivarium and animal surgery area. This may include documentation of the following: TB Test; Hepatitis B vaccine, titer, or wavier, Toxoplasmosis titer (females); Rabies (pre-bite) vaccine, titer, or wavier, Brucellosis titer; Q-Fever titer, Tetanus booster within the last 5; HIV titer, as required. Other special exam such as pulmonary function, respirator fit, audiogram and/or laser vision testing may also be required.
