Automation Engineering Manager

Job Description:

The IDS Modernization, and Innovation (M&I) team is seeking an enthusiastic, innovative team member to lead automation projects in support of all IDS manufacturing programs. This position will be responsible for managing and executing automation and lean manufacturing projects within the IDS work centers. The Factory Automation Manager will report to the Operations Engineering Manager, and will interact directly with operations leadership, engineering, supply chain, and program offices to support the development of Smart Factory/Industry 4.0 roadmaps, continuous process improvement initiatives, execution strategies and sustainment of all deployed automation equipment across the business. The role will also be responsible for supporting the development of business cases, funding requests and execution of projects related to strategic capital investments.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of automation deployment in a factory setting, including high mix, low volume production.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The role will lead a team of direct reports who implement automation, lean and capital projects, as well as works with cross business and functional partners across the company.

  • From time to time the role will provide special project support to capture efforts and other emerging business opportunities.
  • Support the development and implementation of Smart Factory approach and methodology across all IDS manufacturing sites
  • Develop and implement sustainment strategies for all deployed enablers including maintenance and spare parts management.
  • Partner with Operation Centers, Program Operations (POMs) and Transition to Build (TtB) teams to understand top opportunities and develop concepts for improvement (automation and/or process improvements)
  • Support the development of IDS Modernization & Innovation technology roadmap with direct input to the IDS and
  • Corporate Technology Roadmap.
  • Supporting the integration and alignment between IDS programs and the IDS manufacturing capabilities roadmap
  • Application of lean six sigma approach to improve the design and flow of value streams and factories.
  • Execution of initiatives in support of all IDS Programs; development of advanced manufacturing program and business process enablers; and incorporation of best practices focused on early engagement of manufacturing expertise in the product lifecycle
Required Skills:

  • 10 years professional engineering experience in a manufacturing environment, with some experience being directly related to manufacturing, automation and/or controls.
  • Experience in automation development and deployment in a factory setting.
  • Experience in project management, as it relates to automation development and deployment, including MS Project schedule development, and financial measures/metrics.
  • U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date.

Desired Skills:
  • Understanding of Lean principles and terminology and/or six sigma black belt or equivalent
  • Familiarity with Industry 4.0 / Smart Factory concepts, Digital Manufacturing Simulation
  • Understanding of SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems), ISA (International Society of Automation) 95 architectures.
  • Experience with cyber and/or cyber-physical systems security protocols
  • Experience with PLCs, MTConnect, and/or Transactional Automation (use of API, XML)
  • Ability to obtain an SSBI clearance, or candidate holds active SSBI.
  • Experience or education in systems engineering and application to automation systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop business cases and Return on Investment analyses for automation deployments.
Required Education (including Major):
  • BS in and Engineering field or the sciences
Desired Education:

MS in engineering or business related field (for example, systems engineering, manufacturing engineering, or industrial engineering, MBA, Business Management, Program Management)
