Applied Statistician

Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We are looking for a statistician to collaborate with scientists in a wide range of science and engineering fields, including computational biology and predictive medicine, cyber-security, materials science and additive manufacturing, energy analysis, space and planetary systems, climate modeling, and complex engineered systems.

Analytics tasks can include reliability analyses, design of experiments, uncertainty quantification, data fusion, calibration, high performance computing code emulation, statistical learning, and flexible modeling.

Successful candidates will have expertise in a relevant methodology (eg: Bayesian Modeling, Graphical Models, Nonparametric Modeling, Time Series, etc.) and a willingness to adapt and learn new methodologies as needed.

This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Provide solutions in the scope, planning, and formulating modeling/simulation efforts for physical, engineering, and computational systems in the areas of cyber security, biological and environmental threat detection, uncertainty quantification, and others.
- Identify and define complex problems stemming from national security research, propose advanced analysis methodologies, collect and analyze data, and write reports documenting results.
- Adapt and apply existing statistical methods and theories to new problem domains.
- Develop, implement, validate, and document specialized analysis software tools and models as required.
- Collaborate with project scientists and engineers in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals including industrial and academic partners.
- Organize, analyze and Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Master’s degree in Statistics or comparable data analytic degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive programming skills in at least one language such as: R/Matlab/SAS/Python/C/C++
- Experience developing and applying advanced statistical/machine learning models and algorithms.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Ability to travel as necessary to collaborate with industrial and academic partners.

Desired Qualifications
- Proficiency with tools/frameworks: R Shiny, Django, Git, Spark, Hadoop.
- Demonstrated ability to attain subject matter expertise in multiple application domains.
- Experience with computational statistics and statistical software development.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
