AFRICOM Senior Planner

What You’ll Get to Do:  

As an AFRICOM Senior Planner, you will provide expert advice and theater-level planning efforts to assist the geographic combatant command in meeting its strategic and campaign objectives.

More About this Role:  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • You will coordinate with AFRICOM component commands and other strategic and operational partners to identify and document courses of actions. These activities will strengthen partner networks, enhance partner capability, address security and stability in key countries and regions, and set the theater for AFRICOM initiatives across the command.
  • You will interact with partners, both on and off the continent, to advance mutually beneficial plans, initiatives, and programs between the U.S. and key partners.
  • You will improve and expand relationships to solidify our position as the preferred regional security partner in Africa.

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:  

Education: Master’s Degree in a relevant discipline.


  • 15 years of staff experience at the brigade level or higher including 5 years of experience as an Operations Planner at JS, OSD, CCMD, Component, Service, or Agency Staff.
  • 3 years of experience supporting planning and operations in the AFRICOM AOR.

Required Skills, Clearances, etc.:

  • Subject Matter Expertise with the Joint Planning Process and the Joint Family of Plans
  • Experience with JOPES
  • Current Top Secret/Specialized Compartmented Information Security Clearance.

These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:  

  • Successful completion of an advanced planners’ course such as SAMS, SAW or the Army Strategist Course (FA59).
  • Successful completion of a grand strategy course such as a senior service college or the equivalent.
